Hello, my name is Neil Garlick and I am the Home-School Tutoring Advisor and Tutor Manager for County Durham.
I very much look forward to matching tutors with students who will guide their learning in the best possible way. There is no doubt that personal tuition, or small group tuition, provides a huge boost to confidence and understanding whatever the student’s age or ability.
A good tutor will quickly understand a student’s current level, build a supportive working relationship, and use their knowledge and experience to teach the next steps in learning allowing new skills to be practised through increasingly challenging situations. Tutoring sessions will be personalised and flexible to meet the particular and developing needs of each student.
Along with managing other tutors, I enjoy tutoring many students myself. The great joy of being a tutor is seeing each student make progress in their understanding, and become more proficient in using and applying the skills taught, leading to them achieving their goals. This may mean gaining entry to a particular school, reaching a certain grade in exams, or meeting particular curriculum objectives.
It is always a pleasure to see students go from struggling in a subject to approaching it with confidence.
I have been working in education since 2009 after completing a PGCE course in primary education at the University of the West of England. I worked as a teacher in schools in Bristol and Newcastle and have tutored for Home-School Tutoring since 2013. Prior to becoming a teacher, I studied physics at the University of Nottingham (gaining a first class degree).
I live with my wife and dog just outside Durham. Away from tutoring I love running and volunteering at my local park run. I enjoy spending time outdoors, whether walking, camping or tending our allotment.
If you are looking for the right tutor to support your child or yourself towards academic success, I have lots of experienced tutors with availability across County Durham covering a wide range of subjects. Do give me a call or email today and I would be very happy to talk you through how tuition can work for you. I will listen to whatever details you have about your particular situation, so that I am able to match you with the right tutor.
I do look forward to hearing from you,
Neil

Testimonials
"The more lessons I had with you the more I got better - thank you for helping me."
"Thank you for helping me in maths because me and my mum saw that the more lessons I had with you the more I got better. I enjoyed the fun exercises when I would say my times tables and jump around the room. You made learning fun and gave me confidence to try hard. In my test I saw that I had got even better scores in the harder tests. So I want to say a great big THANK YOU!!"

"Exceptionally patient, supportive and encouraging French tutor. My daughter has learnt a great deal and absolutely loved her French sessions."
"My daughter's tutor is exceptionally patient, supportive and encouraging. My daughter absolutely loved her French sessions and it was clear for all to see that she learnt a great deal from the tutor's pedagogic approach to languages. The tutor is a fabulous teacher and diligent in all aspects of her teaching work. The tutor built a wonderful working relationship with my daughter and had a comprehensive understanding of an array of examination syllabi relating to languages subjects. Thank you very much to our HST French tutor for their wonderful teaching work."

"Confidence built from day one on both basic and difficult mathematics for my daughter and developed her understanding."
My daughter actually progressed 2 grade levels in tests at school in the few weeks Mr Rome taught her but more importantly she gained confidence and understanding she also felt a sense of achievement after each lesson. We would like to thank Mr Rome for all of his hard work in building up my daughter’s confidence from day one in all concepts of mathematics for increasing her understanding and for giving her a sense of achievement. Thank you again.

"The tutor took the fear out of maths and physics." ( GCSE)
Dave was excellent. His approach was perfect for Annabel and she grew in confidence with every lesson. Dave was patient and supportive. Annabel was able to grasp concepts she had struggled with at school and the way Dave helped her deal with exam questions was very helpful. He took the fear out of maths and physics for Bella.

"Andrew was given exactly the help he needed and he became much more confident in his abilities in English subjects." ( Year 10 - English Lit/Lang)
"Andrew became much more confident in his abilities in English subjects, he handled classwork, homework, revision and exams calmly. His understanding of the subject grew and he was able to focus more and not feel overwhelmed. Andrew felt more supported and understood than he felt in a large classroom in school.
Both Andrew and I are very grateful for your time and expertise. We feel that Andrew was given exactly the help he needed and will continue to be more confident with written work in general. You were enthusiastic and informative so Andrew enjoyed the process while learning so much."

"Our daughter's confidence grew so much. The impact you have had reaches far beyond academic results & has supported her through a challenging period." ( GCSEs)
"We would like to pass on our sincere gratitude for the tutoring support you have provided to our daughter. The impact you have had reaches far beyond academic results and has supported her through a challenging period.
Prior to the tutor beginning tuition sessions, our daughter was a student with little to no confidence in her ability in maths and no desire to develop her knowledge (primarily due to lack of confidence). With the support of the tutor, she has developed a trust in her mathematics foundation and a confidence to expand and apply her knowledge. This was no more evident than during her GCSEs where she views her maths exams as her strongest performances.
Through consistency and determination, the tutor ensured that she had a solid understanding of the key foundations to mathematics and knowledge of how and when to apply what she had learnt.

"Following Ros’ input and influence, Corey is a changed boy." - (SATs)
"Ros, the tutor, really cared about Corey's learning and development and was extremely responsive to Corey's learning needs in adapting key content areas needing additional attention.
She has been an amazing source of support for Corey in the preparation for SATs, this included not only teaching important content though in preparing himself such as mindfulness techniques. As a result Corey seems much calmer and focused.
Ros has made a significant difference to Corey’s education in terms of attainment, competence, confidence and overall attitude and motivation towards his studies. For 2 years prior to Ros’s input into Corey’s education, he was consistently under-achieving in the majority of subject areas and he was becoming increasingly frustrated at ‘not understanding’ the work that he needed to complete. As we reviewed the school reports, my husband and I were questioning if these reports related to our son!! We were repeatedly being informed Corey liked to talk in class and was easily distracted. Following Ros’ input and influence, Corey is a changed boy. He takes greater pride in his work, his reports are a complete contrast to previous as they now highlight that Corey is working at his expected level/above expected in a much wider range of subject areas! He appears to be quietly confident in his approach to school work and I feel that this again is due to the hard work, commitment and dedication of Ros." ( Parent of Corey, SATs tutoring)
"Thank you to Home School Tutoring for my daughter’s progress." (GCSEs)
"Your Tutor worked with my daughter and he helped her achieve progress in maths from a very low level to being able to hold her own in the now harder GCSEs. The tutor’s ability to tune into her and adapt his approach to what works for her, enabled her to make rapid and sustained progress. As a tutor, his measured, challenging and supportive style grew her self-confidence and enabled her to effectively meet the challenge of the exams. She now has a solid foundation for her future development."
"Neil is exceptional in supporting young people with difficulties ; his gentle manner and encouragement has helped bring out the best in our son."
"Neil tutored our son for more than 2 years and as a tutor he is exceptional in supporting young people with difficulties. His dedicated and gentle manner and encouragement has helped to bring out the best in our son who achieved the B he needed in his re-sit to start the college course of his choice. Neil devises and implements individualised learning plans, and sets realistic goals to help the pupil to achieve. He is skilled in his subject areas, aware of curricula demands and has the ability to impart his knowledge and subject techniques to his pupils that raises him well above the norm. Neil is a very conscientious teacher and keeps pupils and parents up to date on progress made. He has definitely made a difference to the achievements and development of our son, and we whole-heartedly recommend him." (Parent of GCSE Maths student, Durham)
"He is a great teacher and ensured I fully understood everything before moving on" ( GCSE Science tuition)
"I thoroughly enjoyed the three years of tutoring Neil gave me, he is a great teacher and ensured that I fully understood everything before moving on. I highly recommend him to anyone that is looking for a science tutor. He is a lovely chap!" ( Student who achieved a B in his GCSE additional science)
"Personal and excellent tuition" ( GCSE Maths)
"Many thanks for the personal and excellent tuition for my son’s GCSE maths. The tutor’s work enabled him to successfully pass the higher paper, even though his school didn’t really want him to be entered at the higher level." ( Satisfied parent of GCSE Maths student, who achieved grade 5)
