A head teacher in Inner London
Alex became a Home-School Tutoring Area Advisor in 2011, having been a teacher and head teacher in Inner London schools. “After having my children, now 10 and 6, I wanted something that allowed me to do school runs and to be around for the majority of school holidays, whilst still working in education,” she says.
Alex initially applied to join Home-School Tutoring as a tutor. “As luck would have it, my application coincided with a vacancy for an Area Advisor in my area,” she says. “I met with Margaret, loved the sound of the role and the ethics of the company and my new career was born!”
Each day is different
No two days are the same with Home-School Tutoring. “I love that each day is different,” Alex says. “We work with schools, theatres, fostering agencies, the home education community and lots of lovely families, all needing different things.
“Our tutors are a wonderful bunch too – most are in regular contact and as I get to know them more, I can make far better matches with clients. For example, knowing that one tutor was a keen fisherman made for a perfect match for a school refuser with the same passion. They worked together on a book on fishing, doing research, science and writing.”
Support for students of all ages and needs
Pupils aged between 5 and 65+ make up Alex’s current pupil list, and her team supports close to 100 families while also working with a number of primary and secondary schools. English and maths are the most popular subjects but preparation for the 11+ and entrance exams are close behind, followed by other core subjects, a host of languages and SEN support.
“We have had 100% success rate this year in our Independent School Entry exams this year, including KES, Downe House and Godolphin,” Alex says.
“Our GSCE results were impressive with our supported children last year, both privately and in two local secondaries that used us for booster sessions.”
The impact of individual tuition
Alex is passionate about the benefits of one-to-one tuition.
“Our tutors really can make a massive difference – in confidence as well as in knowledge, retention, learning, revision and exam techniques.
“The right tutor will find out how best you learn and help you to understand and apply what you know, complementing and extending what you do at school.
“Even if you are perfectly capable of helping your own child, it often works better for someone else to tutor them and not mum or dad! My own children, for example, both had a tutor, who got far more out of them than I ever could, despite my having over 20 years of teaching experience. In my opinion, it’s one of the best things you can do for your children!”
Testimonials from parents
“Many thanks for being such an amazing tutor – you have changed lives in such a short space of time. The students think you’re fantastic and so do we!”
This is one of the many enthusiastic testimonials Alex has received from parents, students and teachers since taking over as Area Advisor for Home-School Tutoring in West and Central Hampshire.
