Hello, I’m Yvette, the Area Advisor and Tutor Manager for Home-School Tutoring Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Are you thinking of having a tutor for any subject or level or educational need? We cover the whole region and we are committed to recruiting the best tutors and matching them carefully to the students, based on their experience.
The safety of all our pupils and tutors is of the utmost importance to us and all our tutors have been fully DBS checked and have excellent references
We offer face-to-face tuition in a range of settings from a pupil’s home to schools, and other educational establishments. We are also able to offer online tuition where this is more practical or preferred. The sessions can be individual or for small groups. The advantage of one-to-one tuition is the ability to be totally flexible; my tutors can support a learner wherever they are on their learning journey, break down individual barriers to learning and foster a new-found confidence.
I am an experienced teaching professional. During my career I have taught across all of the key stages, and became a Headteacher of a rural Primary school, where I spent seven, very happy years. I was also able to work as a consultant to other schools in the area. I am a published author of a number of Maths support books for teachers and a former Science SAT marker.

*Exam Centres
There are now no schools in Cornwall who accept entries for external GCSE/A Level candidates. We are working with the Council to facilitate the opening of an external exam centre in the County, but there is currently no timescale as to when this may be completed.
We are pleased to be partnered with a nationwide company called Tutors and Exams who have very recently opened a centre in Taunton (in addition to their other centres in Bolton, Belfast, St Neots, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe and Wimbledon).
Tutors and Exams provides examination and assessment facilities primarily aimed at private and home educated candidates. All of their centres are approved for examination delivery by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and they have a dedicated SEN specialist who can assist in organising access arrangements if required. Tutors and Exams delivers examination assessment to over 2500 learners each year.

He conducted her sessions mainly through zoom, which I have to say worried me, as my daughter has a limited attention span and was concerned how long she would stay engaged. Gabriella, in particular, has gone above and beyond, even providing practical experiments at the kitchen table in a way that probably many home tutored children don't have the opportunity to experience. I have felt so confident in Gabriella and her ability to inspire Duncan has been exemplary. Duncan had lost all interest in science at school and had felt that he had 'learned absolutely nothing' prior to being home-schooled. Such was the disarray that the punitive lockdowns and school closures had on children. Duncan is an intelligent boy and an eager learner so, for him to feel this way, was really a statement about the detrimental effects of that period on young people. (As an aside, this is another reason why making home-schooling so difficult now, removes the opportunity for parents to do the best for their children in light of government failures in education over the past two years) With Gabriella, I felt confident in leaving Duncan in her care, knowing that he always came away from lessons brighter than when he arrived. Gabriella quickly got the measure of him and was firm and fair, inspiring him to do better, while also being aware of his interpersonal needs. Duncan felt confident sharing challenges with Gabriella and I knew that, if something was bothering him, he would feel able to discuss his concerns with her and benefited greatly from her insight. In this way, Gabriella has performed an important role in his life over the past 9 months, during a time of huge change and upheaval for him in both his personal and academic life, and has been the best role model I could have hoped for, outside the family unit. During this period of time, Duncan has gone from being absolutely convinced he would fail science, to being competent and loving his science lessons. This has been a huge relief for me as a parent, as two of his potential career plans require him to be competent in science. Gabriella, very quickly tapped into Duncan's natural learning style and this has meant that he has learned very quickly and been able to retain the information that he has been taught.
David V has been similarly inspiring to Duncan, even though he hasn't yet met him in person. David V had no mean feat in covering both history and geography in less than 9 months with only 2 lessons per week. David's lesson materials and resources have been thoughtfully compiled and have provided a great resource in aiding Duncan's learning and revision. I have overheard a couple of Duncan's zoom lessons, in passing, and David has always spoken to Duncan as an equal, respecting him as a thoughtful and capable young person. Duncan and David share some interests in music and military aircraft which, in the outset, provided a common ground and a basis from which Duncan felt relaxed and comfortable with him and aided the development of a mutually respectful relationship. He has been encouraging, and has also tapped into Duncan's learning style, enabling his learning to come naturally. Duncan has appreciated David's laid back and tolerant style and manner. As a parent, I have also appreciated this, given that I have been very unwell this year and there have been times when I had messed up lesson times or even forgotten to remind Duncan to log on, but David has been mindful of my situation (and embarrassment) , has been so patient and rearranged things last minute, and I am really grateful for this, as I know from my own work how frustrating that can be.
David G has also had his work cut out teaching the higher level of maths to Duncan. It became apparent early on that Duncan had missed the majority of the curriculum with the lockdowns and so it has been a huge job fitting in the material, in the time that we had. David G was able to discover where Duncan was confident and to move on to topics that he hadn't covered. In particular, the mocks he took, highlighted the topics that Duncan had never covered at school, and was able to direct the learning towards those topics by the time the exams started. David has always been very organised and structured, and having a combination of both face to face and online lessons has been very helpful.
In general, working with HST Cornwall has been, quite literally, a lifesaver for me, as a parent, and has probably made the difference between academic failure and success for Duncan who was so adversely affected by the past two and half years. My daughter’s English GCSE mock results have also improved massively as has her confidence. “We began looking for a tutor when our daughter was not quite achieving the grades she was after in her English Literature GCSE mocks, despite working really hard.
